100 Black Men of South Bend Freedman Academy

Do you have a son, grandson, young male neighbor or acquaintance who could benefit from mentoring by successful, exemplary black men in our community? If so, please consider enrolling him in Freedman Academy, the group mentoring program of the 100 Black Men of Greater South Bend.

For almost a decade, The 100 have worked to fill the “role-model gap” that too many young black men experience. Devoting their Saturday mornings to these youth, the men of The 100 expose their young charges to academic and cultural activities they otherwise might not experience. They take them to college fairs. They take them on field trips to places of historical, scientific and cultural interest.

This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, The 100 has been forced to offer Freedman Academy virtually—over the Internet. The plan is to begin sessions by the end of October.

So now is the time to enroll your young man. Boys between second and twelfth grades are eligible. There is no fee for the academy. You simply need to fill out the online application, available through this link: https://100blackmenofsouthbend.org/freedman-academy-application
